Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) was traveling at a “high rate of speed” before the car accident he was involved in that occurred in Maryland over the weekend, according to a Maryland State Police report.

The report, obtained by The Hill, said a witness observed that Fetterman’s vehicle was “traveling at a high rate of speed, well above the posted speed limit,” when the car passed her on Sunday morning. Fetterman, who was driving a Chevrolet Traverse, rear-ended a Chevrolet Impala “soon” after passing the witness, according to the report.

The report noted that the highway speed limit was 70 mph and that both vehicles involved were towed from the scene. Fetterman, his wife and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to a hospital following the crash, the police report said.

It also lists that Fetterman was “at fault” for the incident.

“This was an unfortunate accident and I am relieved and grateful that there were no serious injuries. I need to do it better and slower — and I will,” Fetterman said in a statement to The Hill when reached for comment on the report.

Fetterman’s office said Fetterman and his wife, Giselle, were “fine” after being involved in a car accident Sunday morning. The office said both were evaluated at a local hospital and released that afternoon after Fetterman was treated for an injured shoulder.

Fetterman thanked people for their well wishes in a video on social media platform X earlier this week.

“Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary, but we are fine and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family,” he wrote.

Maryland State Police said in a statement earlier this week that “the crash investigation remains active and ongoing,” noting that no citations have been issued.

Miranda Nazzaro contributed reporting.
