Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who attempted to call a meeting of Democratic senators on Monday to discuss President Biden’s viability as the party’s presidential candidate, urged his Democratic colleagues to “talk about the strongest path forward ” towards the November elections.

“With so much at stake in the upcoming election, now is the time to talk about the strongest path forward,” he said on Monday.

Warner said he wants Biden to “more aggressively make his case to the American people” about why he should be reelected.

But he said he also wants to hear from a “broader group of voices on how to prevent” Trump from returning to the White House, signaling that he would like to hear from other potential Democratic candidates, such as Vice President Harris or California Governor Gavin. Newsom, present their own visions of leadership.

Warner attracted a lot of attention on Friday after it was revealed that he was trying to bring together a group of Senate Democrats to talk about Biden’s future.

Two sources familiar with the effort said the ultimate goal of that discussion was to develop resolve to ask Biden to abandon his presidential bid.

But Warner and some of his associates later framed their outreach to fellow Democrats as an attempt to simply promote a discussion about the best path forward.

Warner told reporters at the Capitol on Monday that he is looking forward to “talking face to face with my colleagues” about the election.

“I had difficult campaigns in my time and sometimes I asked questions, at least [in] In my case, it made me a better activist, and I think a lot of people are raising some questions,” he said. “At the end of the day, we have to beat Donald Trump.”
