Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), former chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, joined calls for a congressional investigation into security at Trump’s Saturday rally in Pennsylvania.

“It was a failure,” Johnson told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union.” “There absolutely must be congressional oversight hearings.”

A gunman fired shots at the rally, where Trump was speaking to supporters. The former president said that a bullet hit his ear. According to the FBI, the shooter and a rally attendee are dead and two other attendees were seriously injured.

Reports indicate that the shooter, now identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, took aim from a nearby rooftop, approximately 400 feet away from where the president was speaking. Some civilians near the scene reported witnessing the shooter climbing the building and signaling authorities.

“Obviously, that roof shouldn’t be a place where someone with a rifle could go,” Johnson said. “The Department of Justice, the Secret Service and the FBI need to be completely transparent.”

The House Oversight Committee, led by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), called Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify before the committee on Monday. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) promised to launch investigations into the rally shooting.

Senator Johnson also praised the former president for his calls for national “unity” following the assassination attempt on his life.

“Trump knew exactly the risks he was taking when running for re-election. he knew he would be vilified,” Senator Johnson added. “He realized his life would be at risk, but he did it anyway.”
