Former presidential candidate and pharmaceutical entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy says he is interested in filling the Ohio Senate seat held by Sen. J.D. Vance (R) or serving in a future Trump administration cabinet position.
“I would strongly consider it if I were called to serve,” he said of the Senate seat that would become vacant if Donald Trump were elected president and Vance elected vice president.
“But I would also like to have a serious conversation with President Trump about other ways he could have an impact on the country. My biggest passion is taking on the regulatory state,” he said.
Ramaswamy made his comments in an interview with NBC News NOW’s Hallie Jackson at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Ramaswamy has not yet discussed the matter with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a moderate Republican who would pick a temporary replacement if Vance vacates the post to serve in the Trump administration.
Vance was elected in 2022 and if he leaves the Senate, a special election will be held in 2026 to fill the final two years of his first term.
“I haven’t discussed this with Governor DeWine, but, you know, I’m eager to assess what the future holds. I would strongly consider it if I was asked,” Ramaswamy told NBC.
“But I think there are many other ways to serve this country. And you know, it’s not about what comes after the victory. It’s about what our path to victory will be in November.”
Ramaswamy also discussed with Trump the possibility of serving in his future Cabinet, if elected in November.
“We talked about a lot of different possibilities, President Trump and I. I mean, we talk regularly. I spoke to him, actually, more recently, it was past midnight the night he suffered that injury, tragedy, attempted murder on Saturday night,” he said.
“So we talk about different ideas, potentially, in a cabinet or other ways to promote change,” he added.
