Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) requested an unclassified telephone briefing for all senators from the Department of Justice, FBI and Secret Service regarding the assassination attempt on former President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
The 30-minute briefing will take place at 3pm on Wednesday.
Schumer received information about the shooting, which left one person dead and two other rally attendees seriously injured, over the weekend
He announced the briefing by phone to all senators after Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Gary Peters (D-Mich.) said he would launch a bipartisan investigation into the incident.
Peters told reporters Monday that senators on his committee were receiving detailed briefings from law enforcement officials.
And he said he spoke at length with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday and received instructions from the FBI on Monday.
Peters also said he would try to “expedite” a public hearing on the shooting before the end of the month.
“I’m focused on starting this bipartisan investigation, finding out exactly what happened and making sure this never happens again,” he said earlier this week. “We must ensure that the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have the resources to protect presidents and former presidents, as well as other elected officials.”
