Senate negotiators are weighing their annual Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill as both sides struggle to find a bipartisan deal.

The powerful Senate Appropriations Committee was expected to consider the bill, along with four other full-year funding measures, on Thursday as it works to pass all 12 of the government’s annual funding bills.

“In recent weeks, we have made great progress in writing strong, bipartisan funding bills – passing seven so far out of committee with overwhelming bipartisan support,” Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the committee chair, said in a statement on Monday.

“I hope to maintain the momentum on Thursday as we consider another four bills, and we will continue working toward bipartisan agreement on the Homeland Security bill,” she added.

Congress has about two months until the government shutdown deadline at the end of September.

While the Senate has yet to pass any of its funding bills on the full floor, the House has so far passed five appropriations bills for fiscal year 2025. But the House has struggled to pass several other bills financing last week and began its recess a week later. early.

The delay surrounding the annual DHS funding bill is no surprise. The annual funding bill was a major point of contention in spending talks earlier this year after the collapse of a bipartisan border agreement over the winter.

Since then, Republicans have stepped up attacks on Democrats at the border in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Just days after Vice President Harris received the support she needed to become her party’s nominee, the House led by The Republican Party passed a resolution condemning her as the Biden administration’s “border czar.”
