Sen. Joe Manchin (IW.Va.) on Tuesday lashed out at Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), calling his past comments about “childless hot women” “very strange” as the vice presidential nominee faces backlash because of your comments about people who don’t have children.
When asked Tuesday about Vance’s controversial comments, “That’s a really strange position to take. I’ve never heard that before. It was very strange. I couldn’t believe it.”
Manchin is the latest lawmaker to question Vance’s 2021 comments during which he criticized those who do not have children.
In those comments, Vance told then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson that the country was being run by “a bunch of childless hotties who are unhappy with their own lives and the choices they’ve made, and then they want to do the rest of the work.” miserable country too.”
Vance defended the “hot women without kids” comments last week, calling them a “sarcastic comment” and attacking Democrats as “anti-family.”
“I know the media wants to attack me and wants me to backtrack on this, Megyn, but what I said is that having kids, becoming a father, becoming a mother, I really think it changes your perspective in a very big way. deep,” Vance said on SiriusXM “The Megyn Kelly Show” last week.
The comments have resurfaced as the Ohio Republican has come under increased scrutiny since former President Trump announced he had chosen Vance as his running mate.
Vance spokesman Taylor Van Kirk dismissed the criticism, arguing that left-leaning media distorted Senator Vance’s words and created a false narrative about his stance on issues.
“As he clearly stated, he was talking about left-wing politicians who support policies that are explicitly anti-child and anti-family. The media can obsess about this all they want, but he’s not going to back down when it comes to advocating for policies that protect parental rights and encourage people to have more children,” Van Kirk told The Hill.
He continued to face criticism on Tuesday for comments he made in a 2020 Conservative Podcast when he suggested that “childless people” in the country’s leadership were “more sociopaths” than those with children.
“There are just these basic cadences of life that I think are really powerful and valuable when you have kids in your life,” Vance said on the podcast. “And the fact that so many people, especially in America’s leadership class, just don’t have that in their lives.”
“You know, I’m afraid it makes people more sociopathic and ultimately our entire country a little less, less mentally stable,” he said. “And, of course, you talk about going on Twitter – the last point I’m going to make is that you go on Twitter and almost always the most disturbed and most psychotic people are the ones who don’t have kids at home.”
Democrats, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Harris, took advantage of Vance’s many observations to plead his case against the Trump-Vance ticket or label him as “weird.”
Vance told Fox News on Sunday that his feelings were not hurt by the label.
When asked about Vance’s “no kids” comments by Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump said Monday that his running mate “likes family.” He told Ingraham that Vance has “tremendous support” and argued that she does particularly well among “people who like families.”
