Former President Trump took to social media on Tuesday night to blame technology for his “different and strange” voice during a two-hour conversation with tech billionaire Elon Musk on social platform X’s live audio feature .

“My conversation with Elon last night was heard by a RECORD audience and it was truly something special, as Elon himself is very special – and I thank him for such a strong endorsement!” trump posted on Truth Social. “Unfortunately, due to the complexity of modern equipment and cellular technology, my voice was, in certain areas, somewhat different and strange. Therefore, we released a real, perfect recording of the conversation.”

Trump critics and others who listened to Monday night’s conversation with Musk pointed out that the former president sometimes appeared to have a lisp or was struggling to enunciate words clearly.

Trump and Musk spoke for about two hours at X, an event that was initially postponed due to technical problems that Musk attributed to a targeted cyberattack. At its peak, the event had more than 1 million simultaneous listeners.

While Trump managed to stay political by attacking Vice President Harris during the conversation, something his allies begged him to do, he provoked backlash when he praised Musk for firing striking workers at one of his companies.

The former president spent much of the day following the discussion attacking the media for failing to adequately highlight the large audience who watched.

Trump and his team have pointed to conversations the former president is having with individuals like Musk as evidence that he is willing and able to speak extemporaneously, and have attacked Harris for so far refusing to give an interview or impromptu events.

Polls have shown that Harris has risen since becoming the Democratic nominee following President Biden’s decision to end her candidacy. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election analysis outlet, published data Wednesday morning that showed Harris leading Trump in five of the seven key battleground states.

The Hill/Decision Desk HQ national poll index shows Harris with a 1.4-point lead over Trump, 47.8% to 46.4%.
