Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey praised the platform he founded, now known as X, as “freedom technology” on Saturday, shortly after revealing that he was no longer on Bluesky’s board of directors.

Dorsey confirmed that he had left Bluesky — a decentralized microblogging site created through an initiative he launched while at Twitter in 2019 — in a Saturday morning post on X.

“Don’t rely on corporations to grant you rights,” he said in another post several hours later. “Defend them yourself using the technology of freedom. (you are in one).

Bluesky acknowledged Dorsey’s departure from the board in a post on its website Sunday.

“We sincerely thank Jack for his help in financing and starting the bluesky project,” he said. “Today, Bluesky is thriving as an open source social network running on atproto, the decentralized protocol we built.”

“With Jack’s departure, we are looking for a new board member at Bluesky Utility Company who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience. More to come! the company added.

Following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October 2021, Bluesky was one of several platforms considered as a potential alternative to the platform, as some users were concerned about Musk’s plans for Twitter.

Bluesky launched as an invite-only app for iOS and Android users in February and April 2023, respectively. This February, the platform was opened to all users.
