Kabosu, the dog behind the “Doge” meme, which in turn inspired the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, has died at age 18, according to its owner.

“On the morning of May 24th, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge,” according to a Friday Instagram post. “Thank you all so much for your support over the years. She was very calm and painless, as if she fell asleep feeling the warmth of my hands caressing her.”

Kabosu, a Shiba Inu, gained widespread internet fame as a meme after her owner posted photos of her in 2010. The meme inspired Dogecoin, a popular cryptocurrency for which billionaire businessman Elon Musk has declared his support and favoritism several times.

Japanese dog Shiba Inu Kabosu, better known as the logo of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, rests in the office of his owner, Atsuko Sato, after playing with children at a kindergarten in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on 19 March 2024. Kabosu died at the age of 18, according to his owner.

Musk seemed express your sadness about Kabosu’s death by posting on social platform X an image of a gorilla with angel wings in the clouds hugging a dog that looks like Kabosu.

“OG Doge ascended to heaven to be with his friend Harambe,” Musk responded to the photo, also referencing the gorilla Harambe who was shot by a Cincinnati Zoo employee in 2016.
