Cyber ​​attack disrupts operations at US car dealerships: What we know

(NEXSTAR) – Auto dealerships across the U.S. suffered a major computer system outage on Wednesday as their software provider, CDK Global, dealt with a cybersecurity incident.

The company told Nexstar it has since restored some of its systems as it continues to investigate the incident that disrupted operations at several car dealerships.

“With the work done to date, our core DMS and Digital Retail solutions have been restored. We continue to conduct extensive testing on all other applications and will provide updates as we bring these applications back online,” said CDK spokesperson Lisa Finney . in a statement.

“Our first priority is always the safety of our customers, and our actions reflect our obligation to them as a trusted partner,” she added.

Finney said CDK erred on the side of caution when it decided to shut down all of its systems on Wednesday. While it is unclear how many or which dealerships were affected, CDK works with more than 15,000 retail locations across North America, according to your website.

On a 2023 ReportCDK said 17 percent of the 175 utilities surveyed suffered a cyberattack in the past year.

“Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting auto retailers using sophisticated methods designed to appear from secure, trusted sources,” the company previously said in a statement.

As for Wednesday’s cyber threat, CDK said it has consulted “third-party experts” as it investigates the incident. No further details were released as of Wednesday evening.
