Nissan is asking owners of nearly 84,000 older car models not to drive their vehicles due to the risk of airbag inflators exploding.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) he said Wednesday that the warning affects certain Nissan vehicles that have “unrepaired and recalled Takata airbags.”

“Due to the age of vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators, there is an increased risk that the inflator may explode during airbag deployment, projecting sharp metal fragments that could cause serious injury or death,” Nissan said in the statement. recall page on your website.

The NHTSA said that to date, at least 27 people have been killed in the United States by a defective Takata airbag that exploded and another 400 were reportedly injured by the inflators.

“Even minor accidents can result in Takata airbags exploding, which can kill or produce horrific, life-altering injuries. Older model vehicles place their occupants at greater risk as airbag age is one of the contributing factors,” NHTSA said.

The “do not drive” warning affects certain 2002 to 2006 Nissan Sentra cars, 2002 to 2004 Pathfinder SUVs and 2002 to 2003 Infiniti QX4 SUVs. NHTSA said owners should immediately check if their vehicle has an open Takata airbag recall and schedule a free repair for it as soon as possible if this happens.

“Nissan is committed to the safety of its customers and is issuing this DO NOT DRIVE warning to urge customers to complete the free recall repair. Nissan Group strongly advises drivers not to drive affected vehicles until repairs are complete,” Nissan said in a statement.
