The New York metropolitan area suffered a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, resulting in flight disruptions at nearby airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) posted online that the earthquake, whose epicenter was in New Jersey, “could impact air traffic facilities in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Baltimore.”

“Air traffic operations are resuming as quickly as possible,” the FAA said.

The FAA issued a ground stop for flights departing from Newark Liberty International Airport. Arrivals are delayed by an average of 45 minutes and increase due to the volume of flights. The ground stop is issued until 12:30 pm EDT and has a 30% to 60% chance of being extended.

John F. Kennedy International Airport issued a ground shutdown shortly after the earthquake, which was later lifted. The airport posted online that it remains open and operational and advised travelers to check with their carriers for updates on the status of their flights.

LaGuardia Airport said it also remains open and operational. Flights “arrive and depart at this time,” the airport said.

The earthquake shook the New York City area on Friday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The epicenter was in Tewksbury, NJ, at a depth of just 3 miles.

The New York City Fire Department said it has no reports of damage at this time. The earthquake was also felt in Philadelphia and Boston.

“My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred and we will update the public throughout the day,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D). posted online.
