Tesla recalls almost 2 million cars due to hood problem that increases the risk of accidents

Tesla is recalling 1.85 million vehicles due to a software issue that could result in it failing to detect an unlocked hood, thus increasing the likelihood of it opening fully and causing an accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday published the recall noticedated last Wednesday, warned that “an unlocked hood can open completely, obstructing the driver’s vision and increasing the risk of an accident”.

NHTSA said the recall applies to certain Model 3, Model S, 2021-24 Model X and 2020-24 Model Y vehicles.

A software update is available free of charge to vehicle owners, NHTSA said, and owners do not need to return their vehicles for physical repairs.

Tesla will send notification letters to owners on September 22, the NHTSA said.

Tesla began investigating customer complaints about “unintentional hood opening events” in certain vehicles in China on March 25. according to the NHTSA. On July 17, Tesla decided to issue the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

Tesla’s recall number is SB-24-00-012. The NHTSA campaign number is 24V554000.
