Hundreds of people in Indonesia have had to be evacuated from their homes in North Sulawesi province as the Ruang volcano continues its days-long eruption. The volcano was seen filling the sky with red ash as the country’s volcano monitoring agency reported hundreds of deep volcanic earthquakes.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Countermeasures Agency, known as BNPB, said in a press release on Wednesday that volcanic activity had increased, prompting authorities to raise the alert level to three – the second highest alert level in its country. monitoring system. Video taken by the agency showing huge red explosions filling the sky as lightning flashes within it. The agency also reported “volcanic ash rain.”
At least 828 people were evacuated from the area during the eruption, the BNPB said, many boarding ferries to go to nearby areas.

The last eruption occurred on Wednesday morning local time, the Multiplatform Application for Geological Hazard Mitigation and Assessment in Indonesia (MAGMA Indonesia) reported. The agency said people in the area should remain calm and “carry out their activities as normal” but avoid going near the volcano’s active crater, which overnight was seen spewing a bright red glow into the sky.
That agency reported 373 deep volcanic earthquakes and one local tectonic earthquake on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Volcano Observatory for Aviation (VONA) Advisory issued a orange color aviation codeindicating that a “volcano is exhibiting intense unrest with increased likelihood of eruption” or that an eruption is underway but with “no or little ash emission.”
“The eruption and ash emission continues,” said VONA on to update. “…Rounding sound heard at Ruang Volcano Observatory.”
The stratovolcano is the southernmost of the Sangihe Island arc, says the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, and its summit has a crater partially filled with al.ava domewhich forms when exceptionally thick lava flows are too thick to flow.
“Explosive eruptions recorded since 1808 have often been accompanied by the formation of lava domes and pyroclastic flows that have damaged inhabited areas,” states the Global Volcanism Program.
Indonesia lies along the “Fire ring,“the most active area in the world in terms of seismic activity.
In December, more than 20 people died in Indonesia following a surprise volcanic eruption on Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra.
