Modern slang including ‘sitch’ and ‘noobie’ feature in new Scrabble dictionary

MODERN slang like sitch and noobie are among nearly 2,000 new entries in the Scrabble dictionary.

In a first major update since 2020, officials explained the need to keep the game up to date.

Sitch is short for situation and noobie, or newbie, refers to a newcomer

However, an expression of enthusiasm among young people or a term for launching something with force will also be included.

Nibling (your sister’s or brother’s son) and other abbreviated words doncha (you don’t), Imma (I will), tomoz (tomorrow) and coulda (could have) are also included.

Food terms such as bancham (small Korean food dishes) and birria (a Mexican meat stew) also appeared in the latest edition of Official Scrabble Words, published by Collins.

Others include grammable (something worth sharing on social media) and floof (a very furry animal).

They will be added to the existing 279,073 words.

Approved by manufacturers Mattel and WESPA (World English-Language Scrabble Players Association), the latest edition of the dictionary will be used in tournaments and clubs from January 1, 2025.

WESPA President Chris Lipe commented: “For Scrabble enthusiasts, a new edition of Collins Scrabble Words is like Christmas morning. New words mean exciting new challenges and new opportunities at every turn.”

Collins Dictionaries editor-in-chief Mary O’Neill said: “From three-letter gems like ack and int to punctuators like qameez and zonkey, tournament and casual players can now add lots of new words to their arsenal of potential game winners.”
