He was discovered semi-conscious by a passerby on the road and flown to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Unfortunately, Chris could not be saved and died from a severe brain injury after the horror in Rugby, Warwickshire, last month.

His son Dominic is now urging cyclists to wear helmets, saying: “He was only five minutes from work – he almost got there. You never think it’s going to happen to you until it happens.

“It’s hard to say why I want my dad back, but his injuries could have been lessened or he could have been completely fine if he had been wearing a helmet.

Dominic believes his father must have “scared” the cats when he turned a corner – causing them to run in front of him.

He said one of the animals ran under Chris’ front tire and the other from behind – causing him to fall off his bike.

Dominic was later woken up by his mother Kia Cressey, who told him there had been an “accident”.

Chris’ family rushed to his side as doctors performed an operation to relieve pressure on his brain, which led to an improvement in his condition.

But tragically, Chris began to decline and doctors gave Dominic a heartbreaking situation. news he may not survive the night.

Recalling the horror, the student said: “He said he would either go on his own steam or we will have to turn off the machines and let him fall asleep. So we got the whole family together and we were all there with him.

“They finally turned off his vitals and, to be fair, he really fought to the end. I put my hand on his hand and the other on his chest and finally he fell asleep.”

Dominic said that before Chris died, he put a Bounty chocolate bar in his hand because he loved coconut.

He has now launched a GoFundMe to help give the father of two the best send-off possible.

The family is planning to have “a big mess” and get everyone together to say goodbye, Dominic said.

Paying tribute, he added: “I’m only now realizing what a great man he was in the community. I don’t think anyone can fill that place.

“I am forever grateful to my father and extremely grateful to everyone who donates because for the man he was, he deserves the best.”
