A WOMAN has died after being pulled from a river – with a man known to her jailed for her death.
Emergency services were rushed to the River Derwent in Yorkshire at around 11.40pm yesterday.
Firefighters say they dragged two people out of the waterway.
Bystanders and police officers are said to quickly begin CPR on the woman.
She was rushed to hospital where she tragically died.
Police said today they were investigating the woman’s death and that a man had been arrested.
The 40-year-old man remains in police custody.
North Yorkshire Police said: “We are investigating a serious incident in Malton overnight.
“At around 11.40pm on Wednesday, April 24, we were called to reports that a woman was in the River Derwent in Malton.
“Members of the public and police pulled the woman from the water and performed first aid and CPR.
“She was taken to hospital by ambulance but was unfortunately later pronounced deceased.
“A 40-year-old man, known to the woman, has been arrested in connection with her death.
“He remains in custody whilst our investigations continue.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
“There is a significant police presence in Malton whilst we investigate this incident.
“We understand that the public may be upset or concerned about what has happened – our Neighborhood Policing Team will be in the city to provide reassurance.”
North Yorkshire Fire Brigade said: “Crews from Malton responded to reports of two people in the water behind the bus station.
“Both people were rescued by a member of the public prior to our arrival.
“Crews assisted other emergency services at the scene in assisting the victims.”
