A mother was left horrified after her son was woken up in the middle of the night by a scary voice on his baby monitor.

Kitty O’Brien, 32, at first thought she was going crazy when she heard a man’s deep tone echoing in her son’s room.

The travel agent went to check on 18-month-old Jenson after he started crying at around five in the morning.

As she was about to leave the room, a message came from her £380 Nanit Pro Camera system, which sounded like “hello”.

Stunned, Kitty and her husband John, from Evesham, Worcestershire, combed through footage from the device to investigate.

They discovered that a voice sounded in their system – and they say it’s not the first time this has happened.

Six months ago, the couple heard another, more ominous tone on the system, which sounded like a termination call.

Kitty told The Sun: “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. When I heard this, I realized what had happened.

“I went in to accommodate Jenson early in the morning and when I left the room I heard ‘hello’.

“It was 5am, I thought I was hearing something? John was almost snoring and passed out.

“When I played back the camera, I realized where it had come from.

“Six months ago I heard something similar in the product application. Could I hear ‘hello, can you hear me’?

“I was quite shaken by this. It was supposed to be very safe. My husband and I are very upset and angry.”

The “state-of-the-art” Nanit system allows parents to observe their children via a smartphone app.

It was created to be among the safest baby monitoring products.

Nanit says the strange sounds are due to glitches in its system – and are in no way linked to hackers.

The company says it checked its IT system and no hacks occurred – but admitted its devices are prone to picking up unauthorized signals, including voices.

According to the company’s website, “These cases are difficult to completely eliminate, but we are constantly improving our firmware and uploading improved versions several times a year.”
