The House of Commons has approved plans to exclude MPs from parliamentary power if they have been detained on suspicion of a serious crime.
The measure was taken despite the government presenting a motion to recommend that the ban come into force when an MP is charged.
MPs approved plans on so-called “risk-based exclusions” after voting on them this evening.
It means those detained on suspicion of violent or sexual crimes will be banned from parliament pending approval from an independent panel.
The measures were presented following a number of incidents involving deputies in recent years. Currently, it is party leaders who decide if and when a deputy accused of a crime should be prevented from appearing in the parliamentary office.
