Asylum seekers who have already had their applications rejected will now be part of the group being deported to Rwanda, the Interior Minister has announced.

James Cleverly said the UK has extended the deal it made with Rwanda to now include those who came to the UK illegally, applied for asylum and had their claim rejected.

Previously, only those who were considered to have arrived in the UK illegally on or after 1 January 2022, but who had been informed that their claim might be inadmissible – but not officially rejected – were in the group to be sent to the country. African.

These asylum seekers will then have their asylum applications processed in Rwanda, where they will be allowed to stay if successful, or they will have to seek asylum in another country.

Refused asylum seekers will be offered the same “support package” for a maximum of five years in Rwanda, including education, training, employment and accommodation help.

Cleverly said: “Those who do not have the right to remain in the UK should not be allowed to remain.

“We have a safe third country, ready and waiting to accept people, offer them general support and help rebuild their lives.

“We continue to quickly detain those in line for removal to ensure we have a steady flow of flights to Rwanda.”
