Ed Sheeran surprised a group of music students by performing an impromptu show at their college.

The four-time Grammy winner appeared at Sheffield College as student Lol Bailey, 19, sang the singer’s number one track Shape Of You in the college’s musical and drama theatre.

Sheeran performed the track as well as Castle On The Hill, before playing the guitar while the students freestyled rap lyrics into the microphone.

The 33-year-old musician laughed when a student rapped: “I got to the studio, the new day is waking up, Ed Sheehan is here, my legs are shaking.”

He also answered young students’ questions about the industry and listened to their future career ambitions.

Angela Foulkes, director and chief executive of Sheffield College, said it was “fantastic” to welcome Sheeran to the institution.

“It’s not every day that a global singer-songwriter comes along to share their talent, knowledge and experience with students to help them advance their careers,” she said.

Matthew Henley, music curriculum manager at the college, said it was an “inspiring experience” that students “will never forget”.

The surprise appearance was organized by the Sheffield Music Hub team at Sheffield City Council.

Ian Naylor, head of music education at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield has a rich musical heritage and is committed to developing local talent and seeing our creative industries thrive.

“It was a pleasure to welcome Ed today and see firsthand his commitment to using his global platform to advocate for the importance of music education.”

Earlier in the day, Sheeran visited Red Tape Studios in the city and spoke to young musicians.
