A Met Police officer who “mistreated” and wrongfully arrested a woman for bus fare evasion has been found guilty of assault.

Perry Lathwood, 50, assaulted a woman in front of her son in Croydon, south London, on July 21 last year.

Jocelyn Agyemang was dropping her son off at her mother’s house when the incident occurred.

Police officers were assisting ticket inspectors at the time and after Ms Agyemang got off the bus, they asked her to prove that she had paid for the trip.

At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Deputy District Judge Tan Ikram ruled that it was “not necessary” for Lathwood to “grab the woman’s arm, restrain her and handcuff her”.

He continued: “There were no reasonable grounds to suggest that arrest was necessary.

“The officer made an error in judgment and overreacted.

“I find you guilty of assault.”

Lathwood will be sentenced at the same court on Friday, June 14.
