One person has died in a landslide in North Yorkshire, police said.

Police said they were responding to the landslide, which happened at 1.15pm in Carlton-in-Cleveland.

The force said: “We can confirm that one person has unfortunately died as a result of the incident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

It comes as a yellow warning for rain was issued covering the north of England, the Midlands and north and mid Wales until 6am on Thursday.

“It will be a very wet picture for the rest of the week in many places,” said Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill.

Many places could see 30-40mm of rain, while some areas could receive 60-80mm as heavy rain moves northwards during Wednesday.

There is even a small chance that some mountainous areas could see up to 150mm, according to the forecaster.
