Further heavy rain could cause danger to life and disruption to travel after a landslide resulted in one death on Wednesday, the Met Office warned.

Rain will continue across parts of the UK, while yellow and amber rain warnings remain in place across the country on Thursday.

Simon Partridge, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The average monthly rainfall for May in North Yorkshire is 57.5mm, so today it has rained for almost a month.”

North Yorkshire Police said one person died after a landslide in Carlton-in-Cleveland around 1:15 p.m.

In a statement, police said: “We can confirm that one person has unfortunately died as a result of the incident.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

The Met Office said the area had seen almost a month’s worth of rain in the previous day, with 41.6mm recorded in the last 24 hours in Loftus, a town 20 miles away.

Carlisle in Cumbria suffered the worst of the rain, with 65.6mm falling in the previous 24 hours.

Partridge said there is still “a long way to go” before the rain stops, and rainfall is expected to continue in the area until Thursday night.

An amber warning for rain has been in place for parts of north Wales and northwest England, including Manchester and Liverpool, since midday on Wednesday.

A yellow warning for rain covers northern England, the Midlands and north and central Wales until 6am on Thursday, while another is in place for southern and eastern Scotland until 6pm on Thursday.

The Environment Agency had five flood warnings and 111 flood warnings in place across England.

“Please keep an eye on local Environment Agency warnings, which are just as important as ours.”

He added that the forecast for the upcoming bank holiday weekend was “uncertain” but the weather appeared to be “improving”.
