Meteorological summer is upon us, with June starting at the weekend.

As things stand, it is not necessary to deliver much for there to be an improvement compared to May.

And with high pressure moving in from the west later in the week, the early signs are promising.

Much of the country can expect a few days of sunshine, with temperatures rising to the mid-20s Celsius in the hottest spots.

These types of values are above the June averages and should therefore be considered a pleasure rather than the norm.

After that, however, the signs are not so clear or so optimistic.

While the influence of high pressure will follow us into next week, a weak cold front spreading south on Tuesday allows high pressure to move back into the Atlantic, allowing more unstable conditions to prevail.

In fact, the latest models favor low pressure systems through mid-month, which would suggest slightly wetter than average conditions for the month, particularly in the north and west.

However, temperatures are likely to be above average; this prediction is largely based on climate warming rather than dry, sunny days.

Many of the phenomena that influence climate around the world are currently neutral and therefore unable to provide good guidance on long-term forecasts for the UK and Ireland.

Thus, as often happens, we will be left at the mercy of areas of high pressure and areas of low pressure, competing for precedence over our islands.

A game of two halves? Could it go anyway? Precisely!
