Police were called to Cambridge Road at around 9.50pm following reports of two people seriously injured.

When police attended, they found Maria Nugara, 54, and her son Giuseppe Morreale, 29, who had died at the scene.

Ricotta faces two counts of murder and one count of actual bodily harm.

He is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today.

Neighbor Linda Cooling, 57, a saleswoman, said Essex live that the family in the house “kept isolated” and had several animals.

Ms Cooling said: “I know they had dogs and they were very well looked after. I know they used to have chickens.”

Another neighbor, who did not want to be named, described the deaths as “shocking”.

She said the family had dogs and “large breed rabbits” and that she often bought eggs from them.

The neighbor said: “She was a nice lady, nice and all.”

Detective Inspector Lydia George said: “My thoughts are with the loved ones of the two people who were killed in Ugley last night.

“This will be an unimaginably difficult time for them and they will be supported by specialist officers.

“I know this incident will cause concern in the local community, but I want to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives and staff investigating.

“At this stage we do not believe this incident poses a risk to the general public and we are not seeking anyone else in connection with it.”

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote incident 1271 of May 28.
