Police are scrutinizing a Conservative candidate’s campaign adverts after receiving allegations of voter fraud.

Robert Largan, who is fighting to keep his High Peak seat, has published a series of campaign materials in UK Labor and Reform Party colors.

The graphics also included the phrases “Labour for Largan” and “Reform for Robert”.

Election campaign live updates

In the first post on social media, it says: “Many local Labor voters have told me they will vote for me because they want to keep me as their local MP.

“There were so many that I’m launching a new Labor club for Largan.”

The social media post about Reform links to Mr Largan’s campaign page, which says: “Reform supporters on the other side of High Peak are voting locally on Thursday 4th July and supporting Robert Largan. You can ?”

Derbyshire Police said: “We wish to confirm that we have received a number of messages in relation to allegations of electoral fraud, raised due to concerns surrounding the marketing material.

“An incident has been created and will be reviewed.”

Risk of deepfakes that could derail elections

A spokesman for Largan denied he had done anything wrong, saying all his election leaflets clearly state he is the Conservative candidate and complies with electoral law.

“As Mr Largan’s social media posts and website make abundantly clear, a large number of traditional Labor voters have been contacting him to say they plan to vote for him despite him being a Conservative candidate,” a statement said .

“The same applies to supporters of the Reformation. This is due to Mr Largan’s strong track record of results at High Peak.

“So supporter clubs of traditional Labor and Reform voters have been set up to allow people to tell Mr Largan they are supporting him.

“These are called Labor for Largan and Reform for Robert. These supporters’ clubs are not a new phenomenon.”

Largan won the High Peak red wall seat in 2019 with a slim majority of 590.
