First Minister of Wales Vaughan Gething will face a motion of no confidence on Wednesday.

After serving as Minister of Health and Economy, Mr Geting made history in March, after being elected the first black leader of a European nation.

He faced a turbulent first two months in office and a motion of censure was presented in his leadership.

Why was the vote of censure called?

The vote was called after concerns were raised, including by some within Wales Workaround a £200,000 donation to Mr Gething’s leadership campaign of a company whose owner was previously convicted of environmental crimes.

Second, text messages from a ministry group during the pandemic leaked last monthin which Mr Gething appeared to hint at his intention to delete messages.

This provoked accusations from some opposition members that he might have misled the COVID Consultationbut Gething denies that the messages were related to Welsh government business.

Hannah Blythyn, Deputy Minister for Social Partnership, was later fired by Mr Gething for allegedly leaking to the media.

Cymru Chess then withdrew from a cooperation agreement with the Labor Party, which allowed the party to lend its support to the government on dozens of policies.

Who introduced the motion and who will support it?

The motion was tabled by the Welsh Government Conservativeswhich have 16 seats in the Senedd. Plaid Cymru has said they will also support it, they have 12 seats but one of their members is the President (Llywydd) and does not normally vote.

The only Liberal Democrat member also said he will vote in favor of the motion.

However, the Labor Party has 30 seats, half the total number in the Senedd. One of the Labor MS is the vice-president and therefore does not normally vote due to his role.

What happens if there is a tie?

If there is a tie, whoever is in the presidency at the time must vote to maintain the status quo. In this case, this would be against the motion of censure.

What if a member cannot attend?

If, for any reason, any member is unable to attend the Senedd to vote, proxy votes may be arranged.

Is the vote binding?

As this is a motion of confidence in an individual minister and not the government as a whole, the vote is not binding and the prime minister would not have to resign even if he lost the vote.

What did the Prime Minister/Labour say?

The Labor Party accused the Conservatives of “playing politics” in bringing forward the motion.

Gething said at Prime Minister’s Questions on Tuesday that he was “looking forward” to responding to the debate. He also reiterated that all rules were followed and the ministerial code was not violated.

What about opposition parties?

The Conservatives say Gething “treated the people of Wales with contempt” and that his “authority was undermined”.

Plaid Cymru says the First Minister has “undermined his own office” and that his reluctance to admit any error “signifies a worryingly cavalier attitude”.

The Liberal Democrats say the prime minister has “failed” to meet the standards expected of him.
