Kareem saw the tanks and screamed. His mother and sister ran to meet him and then the tank fired.

The pain was so unbearable that Karim begged the doctors to amputate his leg.

Because of the war, they had to do this without anesthesia. Her screams were so loud that people upstairs thought someone was giving birth.

“My husband, my daughter, Kareem and I were all injured”, explains the mother.

“My husband has lost his vision and is currently awaiting treatment. His intestines are damaged. Kareem has undergone upper body surgery.

“The flesh around his leg is completely gone, leaving only the bone. Meanwhile, I have splinters in my eye.”

The 14-year-old boy, who was at the top of his class and dreamed of having his own bike, now thinks he will never ride a bike again.

Kareem is undergoing huge weight loss and now weighs just 26kg (4st 1lb), unable to move much and has had bone infections.

“Kareem reached a state of despair; he lacked the energy to talk”, says his mother.

“Every time I tried to talk to him, he attacked me. When the intersections closed, his dreams were destroyed.

“Even the faint glimmer of hope we had is gone. We are left with nothing.”

“His condition is getting worse every day,” says his doctor, Saeed.

“He is at risk of losing his life due to the shortage of medical supplies and the many difficulties we face as medical staff in this department.

“We cannot properly handle these cases here. This patient needs to be transferred Gaza.”

Two British charities, Project Pure Hope and Save A Child, wrote to the UK Foreign and Home Secretaries asking them to give approval for Kareem and 10 other children to travel to the UK for specialist treatment.

The charities have experience of taking other children into care outside of Gaza.

“If they are able to enter the UK for a finite period to receive the necessary treatments, we assess that their prospects of survival in the first instance and ensuring a good quality of life will be materially improved.” the letter says.

Money for travel and medical expenses has already been raised.

His stay in Great Britain would only be temporary, during treatment – the British government would only have to authorize it, but they did not.

Other European countries, including France, Italy and Switzerland, have accepted children from Gaza for medical care.

“We are assured that, once again, the UK has the experience and centers to effectively treat and manage these children’s injuries, and that these are not readily available in the local region,” continues the letter to Lord Cameron and James Cleverly.

‘She wakes up screaming’

Two-year-old Zeina is also on the evacuation list. She was injured in a fire following an air raid on the field where she lived.

More than a fifth of her small body is covered in second- and third-degree burns.

His thighs, palms, chest, back, neck, face and forehead are all burned.

“One day, at approximately 2:30 pm, I went to get bread,” says his father, Noor.

“When I came back, my wife was crying and screaming that Zeina was hurt. I asked her what happened, and she told me that there was a strike in the refugee camp while she was cooking, and Zeina started running and fell to the ground. fire.”

Zeina carried out 16 operations in just two months, on average one every three or four days. It’s amazing that she survived.

These children are not only suffering physical pain, but they are also suffering deep trauma. There is no escape for them.

“Her pain keeps getting worse and sometimes she wakes up screaming at night,” says Noor.

“Whenever she sees someone in a medical uniform, she panics and starts screaming. She is always scared and sometimes cannot control her urine.

“That wasn’t a problem before the injury; It only started after the surgeries.

“The situation has gotten so bad that sometimes she wets herself with fear,” says her father. “She only feels safe with me and her mother; It’s like she’s dealing with trauma right now.”

Hospitals, so damaged by the fighting, are unable to give children the treatment they need. Sleeping or awake, they are haunted by the pain of their wounds and the sounds of war.

They have a slim chance of recovery: Britain. If only they could go there.
