A Conservative election candidate has apologized for joking about the date rape drug Rohypnol in 2012 social media posts.

In messages broadcast to Sky News, Oliver Johnstone – who is running for MP in Stockport – wrote “if [sic] it wasn’t for the incentive of material goods, just how you expect me to get laid” before adding another message: “Well, that or rohypnol.”

The former Stockport councilor told Sky News that “these comments were made several years ago and I sincerely apologize for them”.

He was commenting on a post criticizing “Steak and Blowjob Day” – an internet meme created as a supposedly masculine response to Valentine’s Day.

Replying to the post, Johnstone wrote: “Looks like we’ve just found a rebrand for International Men’s Day… I don’t see the problem… you girls are too used to this liberation nonsense.”

He then responded to another critical comment, saying, “I reject the claim that women don’t get pleasure from giving men blowjobs. Steak and Blowjob Day is actually (when you think about it) a free and equal exchange.”

He then joked that the only way to have sex with women was through “material goods” or “rohypnol.”

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “The Conservative Party spoke to this individual and reminded him of the Party’s code of conduct and the standards expected of candidates, including on social media.”
