Nigel Farage declared Reform UK “the opposition to Labour” after his party overtook the Conservatives for the first time in a new poll.

In a further blow to the embattled prime minister, a YouGov poll put Reform UK on 19%, compared to the Tories on 18%.

The results were released moments before an ITV debate between senior figures from the seven main parties.

In his opening statement, Farage declared: “We are now the opposition to the Labor Party.”

The research was carried out after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak released the Conservative manifesto earlier this week.

It shows Reform rising by two points, with Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens losing one.

The full results are:

Work: 37% (-1)
Remodeling: 19% (+2)
Conservatives: 18% (nc)
Liberal Democrats: 14% (-1)
Green party: 7% (-1)
SNP: 3% (+1)
Cymru Chess: 1% (nc)
Other: 2% (+1)

After announcing his surprise return to frontline politics last week, Farage made clear his plans to replace the Tories as the official opposition if Work win the landslide victory that current polls predict.

He dismissed any suggestion of a pact with the Conservatives after Suella Braverman, the former home secretary, said her party should embrace the former UKIP leader, claiming “there really wasn’t much difference between him and many of the policies we advocate”.

The poll is more bad news for Sunak, who has struggled to recover from last week’s D-Day gaffe.
