Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell has died, aged 54.

He was admitted to hospital last month after falling ill.

Campbell won the title with the Gunners and a hero at Goodison Park after saving the Toffees from relegation in 1999.

Arsenal said in a statement: “We are devastated to learn that our former striker Kevin Campbell has died following a short illness.

“Kevin was adored by everyone at the club. We are all thinking of his friends and family at this difficult time.”

Everton said: “Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the death of our former striker Kevin Campbell, aged just 54.

“Not only a true hero of Goodison Park and an icon of English football, but also an incredible person – as anyone who knew him will know.

“Rest in peace, Super Kev.”

Campbell broke into Arsenal’s first team in 1988, before making 213 appearances for the Gunners.

He won the First Division, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup.

He played for Everton between 1999 and 2005.
