Former Scottish footballer Graeme Souness says he has spoken to former Liverpool captain and TV commentator Alan Hansen, who is recovering in hospital.

Hansen, 68, who captained the Reds for four seasons, has been hospitalized since June 9, after the club confirmed he was “seriously ill”.

On Monday, his friend and former teammate Souness said he thought Hansen was “coming back” after he “took the microphone” from him from his hospital bed during a phone call.

“I spoke to him yesterday and he looked fabulous so I hope he is making a full recovery,” Souness told the talkSPORT Outspoken with White and Jordan podcast.

“He’s definitely coming back because he’s done nothing but take control away from me, so he’s definitely coming back.”

Souness, who played with Hansen at Liverpool between 1978 and 1984, said he was calling his friend’s phone and was in regular contact with his son and wife when he received a call from the man himself.

“I got on the train yesterday and I was looking for my seat and my phone rang and I could see it was Big Al,” said Souness, who is currently in Germany covering Euro 2024.

“I’m thinking, ‘Oh, I don’t want to answer this,’ so I sat down and had the courage to call him back and he answered.

“He’s in a difficult situation, but from the way it sounded yesterday, he’s back and I hope I’m right.”

It is not yet known why Hansen was hospitalized.

In a statement released last week, the Merseyside club said: “The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and the entire Hansen family .

“We will provide any additional updates as we receive them in due course and ask that the Hansen family’s privacy be respected at this time.”

Hansen’s former Match Of The Day co-star Gary Lineker wrote on X after the announcement: “Horrible news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family.”
