RESIDENTS of a millionaire’s seaside playground are up in arms over a putrid egg stench that stops them leaving their homes.

Those living in the iconic Sandbanks neighborhood in Poole, Dorset, insist the stench emanating from them is also getting worse.

The heavy pong is believed to be caused by rotting seaweed accumulating on the shore in a corner of Poole Harbour.

The smell of rotten eggs, known as “sandbar stench,” is so strong that wealthy homeowners are being prevented from using their balconies.

Locals say pong is worse at low tide in hot summer weather.

The affected area is also directly opposite a new block of flats selling for up to £4 million each.

It is also opposite the Sandbanks Hotel, where the smell is so strong that it puts guests off.

Some have already turned to Tripadvisor to complain about the situation.

One person wrote: “Not impressed. The sea smelled like sewage at the hotel site so would definitely not recommend a stay unless you have lost your sense of smell.”

But a spokesperson for the Sandbanks Hotel said there was nothing they could do about it.

They said: “It is a weed and can sometimes create a smell for a short period of time. Unfortunately, this is a natural occurrence and is not something within our control.

“The sun hits the algae and it starts to rot, which gives it the smell of sulfur dioxide.

“I think we’ve gotten pretty used to it. Some days it’s bad, some days it’s not, but it’s gotten progressively worse over the last five years.

“This is not a beachfront issue on our main beaches.”

Wessex Water was on site to inspect the sewage pipes in case it was to blame, but is understood to have found no faults.

Sandbanks resident Stephen Allen said: “I pass the area every day and it is noticeable at this time of year.

“When we blow southwest winds, algae and seaweed are blown to that corner. There are meters of them rotting.

“I don’t know what the practical answers are. Authorities are reluctant nowadays to do anything that would disturb the natural ecology.

“The smell might put some people off if they want to buy an apartment in the area, but it’s really very localized.”
