Many emergency services rushed to Winspit Quarry, including three coastguard teams, on Saturday at around 2pm.

Despite the efforts of medics, the OAP, from Poole who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood the couple were experienced walkers.

But the coast guard said the “tragic accident” happened on a path just meters from the edge.

Police said the woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “Dorset Police received a report at 2.03pm on Saturday from the ambulance service relating to a woman requiring medical attention in the Winspit Road area of Worth Matravers.

“Officers attended and sadly the woman, aged 80 and from Poole, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious. The woman’s family was notified and the coroner was informed.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones at this very difficult time.”

A Coastguard spokesperson added: “She was walking with her husband along the South West Coast Path when she slipped and fell 60-70ft at Winspit Quarry onto hard ground.

“I believe they were walking regularly and the path is a few meters from the edge.

“The ground is good and solid, so it appears to have been a tragic accident.”

Swanage Fire Station said: “A team was dispatched to Worth Matravers to a multi-agency incident involving a person falling from a height.

“Sadly, the person passed away at the scene and thoughts are with the family at this time.”

Winspit Quarry was used until 1940.

During the Second World War it was a military defense site before being opened to the public and is now owned by the National Trust.

The abandoned quarry has been used for filming hits such as Doctor Who and the first series of Disney’s Star Wars special Andor.

However, filming was canceled last year due to fears the quarry was unstable.
