A cargo ship carrying timber has become stuck in a river in Cambridgeshire.
The Baltic Arrow became stuck in the River Nene at Wisbech at around 9am on Tuesday as it headed towards the port.
It traveled to eastern England from Brunsbuettel, Germany, according to global ship tracking website MarineTraffic.
The captain of the 80-meter-long vessel reported the “grounding” and video footage showed the vessel positioned diagonally across the river.
The Baltic Arrow was lodged on Tuesday morning
In Cambridge, a small red tug was seen desperately trying to free the cargo ship by pushing or pulling it from the river banks, without success.
The incident was compared to Suez Canal blockage in 2021when the giant Ever Given container ship held up billions in global trade after being stuck in the vital canal for nearly a week.

A spokesman for Wisbech Port told the Daily Mail that the Cambridge incident was a “rare situation” but as the tide had gone out the plan was to wait “until [the] ship is floating on the next high tide to free it from the banks.”
They added: “All berths at Wisbech Harbor are NAABSA berths, which means ‘not always afloat but safely stranded’, so technically all ships dock while moored here during low tide.
“The riverbed is very soft and muddy here and the vessel was designed to dock safely, so we are confident there will be no ongoing issues.”
