Police evacuated schools and homes after a suspected unexploded hand grenade was found.
The “bomb” was discovered in the garden of a property in Bordesley Green Road, Birmingham, on Monday.
The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team rushed to the scene along with firefighters and police.
Professionals are now examining what could be a relic from the Second World War.
Pupils at Bordesley Green Girls’ School were sent home early following the scare.
When parents arrived to pick up their children, they were greeted by a large security cordon.
Residents in the area say they now cannot go near their homes or cars.
Wez Khan, a father of three, said: “Everything is isolated, I can’t move my car because it’s inside the tape.
“It’s a large cordon that covers a large area. The houses around Bordesley Green Girls’ School were evacuated and so were the houses.
“They [were waiting] to the army before they [did] anything.”
West Midlands Police said: “A cordon was placed around a property on Bordesley Green Road where a suspected hand grenade was discovered by members of the public this morning (July 1).
“The Army EOD team will be present to examine the item, and surrounding properties have been evacuated as a precaution and roads are closed.”
All roads around the area remain closed while investigations continue.
