Lancashire Police told Sky News their “position has not changed” – and remains open to helping in the search for Jay Slater.
It comes after the Civil Guard confirmed efforts to find the missing 19-year-old in a remote mountainous area of Tenerife have been canceled.
British officers had initially offered help on June 21, but Spanish police said they were “satisfied to have the resources they need”.
Police end search for Jay Slater
Sky News policing analyst Graham Wettone says Lancashire Police would not be able to insist on helping with the search.
However, he believes local authorities should still investigate where the teenager could be – and speak to Jay friends to corroborate their stories.
Wettone also suggested knocking on doors in the rural area where she disappeared, as some may not even be aware of the case.
Describing Jay’s disappearance as “very strange”, the commenter said that many things about the case don’t add up – and revisiting eyewitness accounts, as well as checking the facts, can help detectives find answers.
“Who did he talk to while he was on that island?” asked Mr. Wettone.
The policing expert speculated that the Civil Guard may have information that is not being released to the public.
“Some police forces around the world are not as open, transparent and happy to share information as they are here,” he added.
June 26: Helicopter searches for Jay
Spanish authorities have been criticized for calling off the search for Jay, who was last seen on June 17.
But a mayor of Tenerife insisted that detectives continue to pursue several lines of investigation.
Wettone said he has no criticism of the way Spanish authorities have handled the case so far.
“This is an adult who didn’t come back after a night out,” he added. “You can’t launch a large-scale survey every time this happens.”

Paulo Arnott
Meanwhile, a volunteer who has been scouring the landscape for Jay said he was stopped by two plainclothes detectives on Monday.
The “special investigation team” recognized Paul Arnott from his TikTok videos.
Arnott said the two officers were “very nice” and “communicative” and shared information about areas they believe Jay could be in.
“They gave me direct WhatsApp so I can contact them if I find anything,” he added.
