A plane heading to Heathrow Airport was diverted when it was struck by lightning.

O British Airways The flight from Stuttgart had to land at Gatwick following the strike, according to The Sun.

BA confirmed to Sky News that the flight experienced “adverse weather conditions”, without giving further details.

Passengers were taken to their intended destination, Heathrow, after BA919 touched down at Gatwick shortly before 2.25pm ​​on Sunday.

A BA spokesperson said: “The flight was diverted due to adverse weather conditions.

“We regret the inconvenience to our customers’ travel plans.”

No injuries or damage to the plane were reported.

The Met Office confirmed there was “heavy, thunderous rain” with “frequent lightning” in many parts of England on Sunday, including in London.

Planes being struck by lightning during a flight is not as uncommon as some travelers may believe, experts say.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a commercial jet is struck by lightning on average “once or twice a year.”

“They are designed and constructed to have conductive paths through the plane to receive lightning and conduct currents,” their website adds.
