A chimpanzee at Edinburgh Zoo has died after a fight broke out in the monkey’s enclosure.
Rene, a 31-year-old man, was seriously injured in the fight and died last week.
The other chimpanzee Qafzeh was also injured and required surgery. The monkey is said to be doing well and is gradually being reintroduced into the troop.
Edinburgh Zoo, administered by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotlandsaid zookeepers tried to intervene and stop the fight, but René could not be saved.
In a statement released online on Monday, the tourist attraction said: “We are sad to share the news that Rene, one of our chimpanzees, sadly passed away last week following a fight within the troop.
“Chimpanzee group dynamics are incredibly complex and Rene, who was 31 years old, was part of a fight that broke out within the troop.
“This type of behavior occurs in nature, especially during breeding season, when females are in season and when males challenge group dominance.
“Our expert guardians did everything they could to break up the fight and keep the rest of the troop safe, but unfortunately René’s injuries were serious.”

The zoo said René was a “great personality”, adding that he “will be missed by those who cared for him”.
