Dramatic CCTV shows the moment an arsonist almost sets himself on fire – before the blaze claims the life of a man in Wolverhampton.

Akashdeep Singh, 26, died in hospital following the fire at his house, police said.

His family described him as “a true hero” whose “boundless kindness” filled their lives with joy.

A 16-year-old boy was also left in a life-threatening condition and a 52-year-old woman suffered life-changing injuries.

Four people in total were injured in the fire at Mr Singh’s family home in Plascom Road, which started at around 1am on 25 June.

Detectives are now appealing for help in tracking down the arsonist responsible and released CCTV on Tuesday that allegedly captures the arsonist starting the fire.

In the nighttime video, a person can be seen repeatedly banging on a window until it shatters, before starting a fire that erupts with a huge explosion of light.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards said the footage shows a concerted attempt to cause a significant fire.

“Do you recognize the person on the CCTV?” he says in the video appeal.

“They could have been injured by burns or their clothes could certainly have been damaged. Do you know this person? Did this person confide in you?”

DS Edwards said the crime would require a “significant degree of planning” and that the motive was still unclear.

In a statement released by police, relatives of the victim said: “Our family is deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Akashdeep Singh’s passing.
