A former Labor MP has called on the man who took office to “provide a full account of all his dealings” with one of his supporters, who now faces terrorism charges.

Leicestershire Police confirmed on Wednesday that Majid Novsarka – known as Majid Freeman – was facing charges of encouraging terrorism and supporting a proscribed organisation, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Novsarka, who is from Leicester, was a strong supporter of Shockat Adam, who won the seat of Leicester South at last week’s general election, expelling the then Labor Party general treasurer, Jonathan Ashworth, from the constituency by 979 votes.

Novsarka posted numerous messages of support for the new parliamentarian, including saying that “the best man won” after the vote.

Meanwhile, Adam tweeted a video of Novsarka questioning Ashworth during the campaign about his stance on the war in Gazawriting: “Politics is about answering tough questions – if you can’t take the heat…”

Speaking to Sky News, Ashworth said his successor had “serious questions to answer about his association with this individual”.

Ashworth added: “The safety of the people of Leicester must always come first.

“Decent-minded people in Leicester expect their new MP to provide publicly and without equivocation a full account of all his dealings with this individual on the campaign trail.”

Sky News has contacted Mr Adam for a response.
