A FATHER was mortified when an uncomfortable swelling on his trainer turned out to be a dead rat – which had been there for two months.
Stephen Pattison, 50, kept flattening a crease in the lining that irritated him every time he wore the shoe.
But he decided to remove the sole and investigate properly when his right sock started to smell – and was horrified to see a crushed rodent.
Stephen, who blames the family cat, explained: “I thought it was the cardboard from the trainer pushing up or even the gel. It was disgusting. I kept pushing it down, hoping it would resolve itself.
“But my right sock kept smelling like ammonia every time I wore the shoes, so I decided to check it out.
“I took the sole off and it looked fine until I turned around and saw the mouse.
“All I could think was ‘damn cat’.
“My wife, Sônia, on the other hand, was almost sick.”
Her five-year-old pet, Cinder, regularly brings mice to play – and it’s likely this one has taken refuge inside her trainer.
Stephen, a cleaner from Thirsk, North Yorks, added: “They are always alive and she spends time chasing them around the house while I try to catch him.
“She’s a little upset about it. On this occasion, she brought it and it is hidden from her.
“How it got under the sole is beyond me because it was glued on, but I’ve been walking on a dead rat for two goddamn months.”
