A child has died and five people have been taken to hospital after a house fire in east London.

The cause of the fire, which damaged half the ground floor and half the first floor of a semi-detached house in Napier Road, East Ham, is under investigation.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 8.30am on Saturday, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

The London Ambulance Service sent ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, members of its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and an air ambulance to the scene.

They said the five injured people were taken to a major trauma center.

LFB Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said: “This is a terribly sad incident and the thoughts of all of us at London Fire Brigade are with the family, friends and everyone affected at this difficult time.

“The team will be out in the local community over the next few days to offer support and advice where needed.

“The wellbeing of our staff is very important and everyone involved will receive support from our trauma and counseling service.”

Several road closures were implemented while emergency services dealt with the fire, which was brought under control by 9.10am.
