Firefighters rescued a horse in a two-hour operation after it became stuck in a bog in Brecon, Powys.

Center and West Wales The Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to a report that a horse had become stuck in a boggy field at 12pm on Sunday.

The 20-year-old animal, which measured about 17 hands long (1.7 m), was trapped in about five feet of mud.

The fire department’s animal rescue team based in Pontardawe devised a rescue plan, assisted by fire crews from the Brecon station.

The suction caused one of the horse’s hind legs to get stuck in the mud and he became exhausted in his attempts to free himself.

The horse was rescued using rescue tarpaulins, a sliding mat, straps and shovels.

After being rescued, the horse was handed over to the care of its owner and veterinarians who were also on site.
