Eight fire engines rushed to reports of a “chemical incident” on the block at 12:35 this morning.

They remained at the scene for five hours before allowing residents to return to their apartments.

Ambulance crews and a hazardous area response team also attended the scene.

Ten people were treated for respiratory problems and taken to hospital.

The London Fire Brigade said it was investigating the cause of the “chemical incident”.

Crews arrived at the scene from fire stations as far away as Euston in north London and Bethnal Green in the East End.

Station Commander Graham Crow said: “This was a prolonged incident with crews remaining at the scene for several hours.

“Motorists have been advised to avoid the area due to a cordon placed around the property.”

The residential road was closed after firefighters arrived but has now reopened to traffic.
