A 31-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl have died after a house fire in Huddersfield which police are treating as “suspicious”.

The force added that a 10-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to a fire on Leeds Road by firefighters at 2.24am this morning.

The force said the woman and two children were rescued from the property before being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police previously said the woman had died in the early hours of this morning.

In an update this evening, officers said the eight-year-old girl had also died.

Police said the fire is being treated as suspicious but they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The crime scene is still in place.
