Drunk thieves broke into a cruise ship jewelery shop and stuffed rings and necklaces worth £76,000 down their trousers.

Gary Cooper and Benjamin Greenwood had been on the MSC Virtuosa for four hours, drinking unlimited drinks while docked, when they arrived at the unmanned store.

Security tracked them to onboard bars and called police to the ship in Southampton last year, but no items were found.

The ship had to leave, leaving no time for officers to check the CCTV and recover the jewellery.

Greenwood, 33, later handed over three rings and a necklace.

Cooper, 30, sold other items.

The pair, from Chichester, West Sussex, admitted the robbery.

They received suspended prison sentences and 270 hours of unpaid work.

Their lawyer told the Southampton court that drunkenness was a “recipe for disaster”.

He added that what they did was “foolish and stupid.”

Judge Nicholas Rowland said: “This was an impulsive robbery from an unattended store.”
