The Home Secretary said prisons “stand ready” for the “minority of criminal thugs” rioting across the UK, ahead of an emergency COBRA meeting today.

Yvette Cooper will hold the emergency meeting this morning after almost a week of riots in cities and towns across the UK.

More than 140 people have been arrested so far across the country. In Middlesbrough alone, officers arrested 43 people.

She told Sky News that those involved, who injured police officers, attacked mosques and caused criminal damage, were “a minority of violent criminals”.

“They don’t speak for our communities,” she said.

Cooper added: “We make sure that there are additional prosecutors, that there are arrests, that the prisons are ready and also that the courts are ready.

“We have made it very clear to the police that they have our full support in pursuing the full range of prosecutions and sanctions, including serious prison sentences, long-term labelling, travel bans and much more.”

She promised that “the full range of offenders” – from those who showed up at the last minute to those who committed arson “will face arrest and a prison cell… to ensure they pay the price for what they have”. done”.

Several MPs, including UK Labor, Conservative and Reform leader Nigel Farage, have called for parliament to be taken out of the summer recess to deal with the violence.
